Carolina One Real Estate
Grange Cuthbert began his real estate career in 1964 as a sales associate in Summerville, SC. Several years later he became a partner in his company and in the late 1970's bought out his partner to become Carolina Real Estate. By 1986, Grange had grown the residential brokerage operation to five offices, which he sold to Merrill Lynch and continued to manage. In 1990 Merrill Lynch sold its entire real estate operation nationally to Prudential Real Estate Affiliates. Prudential's strategy was to be a franchisor rather than an owner and Grange, along with Robert Helms in Winston Salem, Zach Bacon in Raleigh, Dan Joyner in Greenville, and Muriel Helms in Charlotte (all former Merrill Lynch owners) joined together as Prudential Greater Carolinas Realty to repurchase the North Carolina - South Carolina operations. In 1997 the Prudential Carolinas partnership separated into three distinct organizations with the Coastal Division (Charleston, SC, Wilmington and Wrightsville Beach, NC) remaining under Grange’s leadership.
O'Shaughnessy Realty Co. was begun by Dave O'Shaughnessy in 1969. Affiliated as an ERA franchisee in the early 1970's, the company grew from one to eleven neighborhood offices. Dave led the organization as President until 1984 when he suffered a cerebral hemorrhage and died the following year. Michael O’Shaughnessy, Dave’s son, was licensed in 1978 as a sales associate and at the time of his father’s illness assumed leadership of the company and subsequently became President and purchased the company from his father's estate. Patty Scarafile was licensed as a sales associate in 1977 with O’Shaughnessy Realty, managed branch offices, and in 1985 was named Vice President. By the late 1980s the company had grown to approximately 145 sales associates with approximately 13% market share. In late 1989 the company discontinued its franchise with ERA and joined the PHH Homequity Relocation network. In May 1992, O'Shaughnessy Realty Co. purchased the Coldwell Banker company owned operation in Charleston and became Coldwell Banker O'Shaughnessy Real Estate. By 1994 the company was Coldwell Banker's #1 broker in the Southeast Region with over 260 associates and over 25% market share. In 1995 Patty Scarafile became a stockholder and its President.
May 1, 1999 O'Shaughnessy Realty Co. merged with Prudential to become Prudential Carolina Real Estate. In 2000, the Wilmington, NC offices were sold. Today the company has a
28.7 % market share of the Metro Charleston MLS, 15 sales offices, a New Homes division, and administrative offices that provide Relocation, Training, Career Development, Technology, Marketing, Accounting and Mortgage Services to over 1050 sales associates.
